Why you shouldn't look a cat in the eye: ancient beliefs and modern science

Throughout history, cats have received mystical interpretations associated with their gaze. From ancient times, when the Egyptians worshipped them, to medieval associations with witchcraft, attitudes towards these mysterious creatures have evolved. Among the various beliefs and prejudices, the notion that one should not make eye contact with cats has taken on special significance.

As to to omens and esotericism, it is considered unfavorable for a person to maintain eye contact with a cat, especially after sunset. There is an opinion that the intense gaze of a cat can absorb a person's energy and affect his well-being.

The long-standing belief that cats serve as guides in the afterlife states that a cat's long and penetrating gaze can not only undermine a person's health, but also jeopardize their life.

It should be noted that black cats are widely mythologized in folklore, suggesting that avoiding eye contact with them is essential, as they are considered servants of evil forces such as witches and warlocks.

In contrast to these long-held beliefs, zoopsychologists offer a more rational explanation. Experts in feline behavior suggest that prolonged and intense staring can be interpreted as an aggressive act on the part of cats. Accordingly, cats may react in different ways: attacking, hissing, fleeing, or simply averting their gaze.

However, it is worth noting that when cats themselves look at their owners, it is usually not associated with aggression. Visual acuity in cats is lower than in people, and they need time to focus their gaze, especially after a long sleep.

Earlier, experts answered why cats like to sit in boxes. This behavior is explained very simply.
