Drinking coffee is often associated with improved heart health and increased life expectancy. However, the effectiveness of its health benefits may depend on the time of consumption.

According to CNN, a new study published in the European Heart Journal found that people who drink coffee in the morning enjoy more health benefits than those who consume it at other times of the day.

How the study was conducted

The researchers analyzed nutrition and health data from 40,725 adults aged 18 and older collected as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 1999 to 2018. The study included both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee.

The researchers identified two main options for coffee consumption: in the morning and throughout the day. By the end of the average follow-up period, which lasted about 10 years, 4,295 deaths from all causes were recorded, of which 1,268 were from cardiovascular disease and 934 from cancer.

What were the results?

The analysis showed that people who drank coffee in the morning had a 16% lower risk of dying from any cause and a 31% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who did not drink coffee. For those who drank coffee throughout the day, no heart health benefits were observed, and the risk of mortality was not reduced.

These results remained unchanged even when the researchers took into account various factors such as sleep duration, age, race and ethnicity, gender, income, education, physical activity, eating habits, and the presence of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

According to the study, people who drank coffee in the morning had a lower risk of death, regardless of whether they limited themselves to two or three cups a day or consumed more. However, the health benefits were lower for those who chose only one cup of coffee in the morning.
