Gardeners once believed that roses could not thrive next to other plants. In fact, by planting companion flowers, you can enhance the best qualities of roses even further. UaPortal has compiled some tips on which flowers can be planted alongside roses and which ones are better to avoid.

The right companions for roses

Next to roses, you can plant ornamental plants such as clematis, delphiniums, daisies, garden geraniums, daylilies, and hostas. Conifers like juniper, dwarf pine, dwarf fir, and thuja can also be excellent companions. Additionally, consider defensive plants like thyme, yarrow, ornamental onions, tansy, and marigolds.

Flowers that should not be planted alongside roses

While there are numerous suitable companion options, there are a few flowers that are best kept away from roses. For example, these include gladioli, muscari, and dahlias. Furthermore, it's advisable to avoid species with spreading rhizomes, as they can potentially disrupt the harmony of the rose garden.

Roses' preferences

When planting other plants alongside roses, remember two crucial rules. Firstly, roses do not appreciate crowding. Ensure each bush has enough space to flourish in a mixed planting.

Secondly, avoid planting roses in densely shaded areas. While they can tolerate partial shade, it's not the ideal location for their growth and development.
