A new ocean is forming on Earth, which will divide Africa in two - scientists
A group of scientists conducted a study that showed that the fault, which appeared in 2005 and has a length of 56 km, will eventually become an ocean that will divide Africa into two continents. This is indicated by the obtained seismic data of the formation of the fault: it was caused by processes similar to those occurring on the ocean floor.
The New Times writes about it.
The potential formation of an ocean in Africa has shocked many scientists. According to Dr. Edwin Dindi of the University of Nairobi, who specializes in geology, it is likely that ocean formation is indeed taking place along the eastern arm of the African Rift Valley.

"The eastern arm of the Rift Valley is quite active, as you can see from the many aftershocks that are happening around it. But it will take a long time, perhaps millions of years, for this to happen," says Dindi.
The scientist explains that tectonic plates constantly move chaotically. Thanks to this movement, the continents were formed.
Dindi added that constant movement within the continental crust also caused the formation of the East African Rift Valley, which remains active and widening and could lead to the formation of a new ocean in Africa.
"But it won't happen immediately, it will happen over millions of years. Remember that it took over 30 million years for the thickness around the rift valley to decrease from 40 kilometers to 35 kilometers, which means it will take many more years for the fault to increase by another five kilometers," reassures the scientist.
