Water is an integral part of our daily lives. We need it for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene.

It is critical to ensure that the water we use is clean and safe. Together with Ukr.Media, we share several methods to help you check its quality.

How to test water quality yourself

To assess the purity of water yourself, try the following methods.

Start by filling a transparent bottle with water, closing it tightly and leaving it in a dark place. After a few days, check: if the water remains without visible changes, without films on the surface, deposits on the walls, or sediment at the bottom, it is of good quality.

You can also use potassium permanganate. Dissolve a pinch of potassium permanganate in water and observe the color change: if it turns light pink, the water is suitable for consumption. Yellow color indicates poor quality of the liquid.

Another method is to add raw water to your tea. Add 40-50 ml to a cup of tea and evaluate the color change. If the tea remains light, the water is considered to be of good quality. If the tea becomes cloudy, it is better to refrain from using such water.

The weight of the water can also be an indicator of its quality. Using an accurate kitchen scale, compare the weight of two water samples: a control sample and a test sample. If they have approximately the same weight with a difference of no more than 1-2%, the water is considered to be of good quality.

Finally, use a mirror to check for impurities. Put a drop of water on the mirror and let it dry. If no traces remain on the mirror after evaporation, the water is of high quality. Traces indicate the presence of impurities.
