How to make a campfire safely and quickly: five important tips
How to make a campfire in nature in a safe way

When it comes to making a campfire outdoors, safety should always be a top priority. UAportal has prepared five important tips that will help you light a fire not only with pleasure, but also safely for all participants.

Choose the right place

Look for designated fire pits or clean areas away from any flammable materials, such as dry grass, bushes, or overhanging tree branches. Make sure there is enough space around the fire for people to sit comfortably without getting too close to the flames.

Keep the fire at a reasonable distance from tents, camping equipment, and any other property to minimize the risk of unintentional sparking fires. Remember that safety starts with choosing the right place.

Prepare the fire pit

Start by removing trash, leaves, and other combustible materials from the fire pit area. Ideally, the fire pit should be lined with stones or a metal ring to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading.

Make sure the pit is deep enough to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the surrounding area. This will help prevent accidental forest fires and ensure that the fire is under control throughout your campfire.

Collect the right kind of firewood

Choose dry firewood that is free of moisture, as wet firewood can produce excessive smoke and sparks. Hardwoods such as oak, maple, or birch are ideal for keeping a clean burning fire.

Avoid using soft woods such as pine or cedar, as they tend to produce more sparks and tar, which increases the risk of accidents. Remember that the quality of the firewood directly affects the safety and enjoyment of the fire.

Starting a fire safely

Start by placing a small amount of brushwood, such as dry leaves, branches, or newspapers, in the center of the fire. Arrange kindling, such as small sticks, in a teepee shape around the kindling, allowing air to circulate.

Use matches or a lighter to light the brush to provide a reliable source of ignition. As the fire grows, gradually add larger pieces of wood, maintaining a steady flow of air to keep the flame alive. Avoid using catalysts such as gasoline, which can lead to an uncontrolled fire and serious injury.

Maintain and extinguish the fire

Never leave a fire unattended and always keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby. Keep an eye on the fire so that it does not spread outside the campfire and does not grow too large.

When the time comes to put out the fire, start by reducing the flames by adding small pieces of wood. Use a shovel or stick to scatter the coals and ashes, allowing them to cool. Slowly pour water over the fire, stirring the ashes to ensure complete extinguishing.
