3000-year-old tomb of venerable priest discovered in Peru (photo)

Archaeologists have unearthed a tomb estimated to be 3,000 years old at a site called Pacopampa in Peru. According to preliminary guesses, the tomb belonged to an elite religious leader.

The archaeologists named the discovery Priest of Pakopampa after the name of the archaeological zone where the tomb was discovered. This was reported by Fox News.

The tomb was covered with six layers of ash mixed with black soil and was decorated with ceramic bowls. The tomb also had two seals along the top edges, which indicate an ancient ritual body paint used for people of noble birth.

One of the seals had an image of a jaguar facing west, while the other had an anthropomorphic face looking east.

Yuji Seki, who led the project, described the large tomb as almost 2 metres in diameter and one metre deep, which was "very strange". He noted that the position of the body was also unusual, as it was lying face down with half of the body stretched out and the legs crossed.

The rock layers under which the tomb was discovered indicated that he was buried around 1200 BC.
