How to store walnuts properly

Walnuts can be stored either in their shelled form or with their shells intact. However, some rules must be followed to keep them fresh for as long as possible.

As you may know, nuts are a highly nutritious and healthy food product. They can be added to cereals, baked goods, meat dishes, and more.

How to store shelled nuts

If you decide to store walnuts in their shelled form, begin by removing the outer shells and sorting the kernels. This process increases the risk of infestation by various insect larvae, so it's advisable to either bake them in the oven or pan-fry them for 5-8 minutes to kill any potential pests.

The kernels can also be disinfected by drying them in the microwave at 100-150°C for 10 minutes.

Store the peeled and dried nuts in an airtight container, such as a glass jar or a plastic container. They can be stored in this manner for up to a year in a cool location.

How to store walnuts in the refrigerator

Peeled walnuts can be stored in the refrigerator without their shells, but they should be placed in ziplock bags or tightly sealed plastic containers.

They can be kept in the refrigerator for 4-5 months or in the freezer for up to 12 months. If you choose to freeze them, it's best to wrap the nuts in cling film, foil, or plastic bags.

How to store walnuts in their shells

Walnuts can also be well-preserved with their shells intact. However, they should be thoroughly washed, placed on a baking sheet to dry and disinfect, and then stored. Failure to dry them adequately may result in shorter shelf life, as excess moisture and unfavorable conditions can lead to spoilage and rot.

The best storage options for walnuts in their shells include insulated boxes or shelves in a pantry. Adequate ventilation and avoiding direct sunlight are important. Walnuts can be stored in this manner for up to 2 years.
