What to do to prevent onions from rotting quickly: tips
Onions are a vegetable that is harvested in summer and can be stored for many months. However, if stored improperly, onions can start to rot faster.
UAportal has collected tips to help prepare onions for long-term storage. You should know how to properly harvest and dry onions.
Thus, onions can be harvested only when the bulbs have reached their varietal size and a certain weight. Also, the leaves of the vegetable should turn yellow and lie down and the outer scales should become dry. At the same time, you can only dig up onions in dry weather. In particular, watering should be stopped 7-10 days before harvesting. This is to prevent it from rotting. However, in the case of prolonged rains, you should not delay the harvest either. In this case, the onions should be dug up and sent to a well-ventilated place to dry. However, it should be protected from sunlight. It can take three weeks or more to dry completely.

You should know how to harvest onions properly. This should be done with a shovel or pitchfork. Clods of earth should be removed from the vegetable by hand. It is important not to beat the onion on the ground, as this increases the risk of rotting. Also, do not immediately cut off the roots and leaves. This can only be done after they are dry. In particular, first, you need to cut off the roots with scissors, leaving about 5 mm and then cut off the dry part of the feather. However, the onion itself should be left with a soft neck; it does not dry out. After that, the onions can be sorted. Large vegetables should be eaten first, as they begin to rot faster.
It should be added that onions can be stored in wooden or plastic boxes with access to air.
