"Stinky" temple of the Mayan god of death found in Mexico (photo)

Archaeologists have made an amazing discovery in southern Mexico – a temple dedicated to the Mayan god of death, A Puch, also known as "The Stinker." In addition to his gloomy reputation, this god was associated with flatulence.

The temple was found during the construction of a railway station near the ancient city of Calakmul. The complex was probably part of the smaller settlement of Balamkul and dates back to the early Classic Maya period (250-600 AD), according to the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia.

The most interesting find was a small temple, inside which archaeologists found a round structure with human remains and a 25-centimeter statue of A Pucha. The statue depicts a god with a large phallus, a deformed skull, and a mask.

According to Mayan beliefs, A Puch ruled the underworld of Xibalba, where he burned the souls of the dead, starting with the mouth and anus. So one can only imagine what rituals were performed in this temple.

This discovery is an important contribution to our understanding of Mayan culture and allows us to look into their dark but fascinating world of beliefs, archaeologists say.
