Archaeologists working in Bulgaria have discovered a medieval house in which a treasure trove of gold coins was hidden. They were made during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great.
According to Live Science, gold coins of the sixth century were found during excavations in Debnevo. The front side of the coins features an image of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great with a pearl tiara. The reverse side depicts the personification of Victory holding a wreath in her right hand and a cross and globe in her left.

The house where the coins were hidden in the floor dates back to the 10th century. Archaeologists assume that the medieval inhabitants of the house could have kept the coins as a kind of relic or artifact. The house itself was damaged by fire at some point. Iron tools were also found here, including two sickles and two axes, a belt buckle, ceramic dishes, and three bronze rings.
All five coins found are of the same type, the tremissis, a small gold coin worth one-third of a solida. The coins bear the inscription "Our Lord Justinian Eternal Augustus" and "Victory of the Augustans". Archaeologists suggest that the two coins probably stuck together during the fire that destroyed the house.
