Experts advised which wood is the best for heating a house

In winter, many people heat their homes with wood. For the most efficient heating, it is worth using specific types of wood because different tree species have varying properties.

This information was reported by the Khmelnytskyi Regional Forestry and Hunting Department. It is noted that almost all firewood are suitable for the stove, but preference should be given to long-burning species.

Ideal options for efficient home heating with firewood are:

  • Hornbeam
  • Oak
  • Ash
  • Maple

"They take a long time to ignite and burn for a long time, turning into charcoal, which keeps the stove heated for some time," the experts emphasized.

At the same time, despite its good heat transfer, alder burns extremely quickly. Experts advise giving preference to birch, which, in addition to stable heat, also has disinfectant properties.

"Birch contains tar, which helps firewood ignite quickly and burn well for a long time. Aspen helps to clean the chimney from soot. However, such firewood does not provide good heat transfer. Therefore, they are hardly ever used for home heating," the Department added.

Another option is coniferous trees; however, they emit a lot of smoke when burning.

"Firewood for the stove should also be well dried. How do you check if the firewood is well dried? Remember one simple old method: if you hear a ringing sound when one log hits another, it means that such wood can already be used for heating," the agency summarized.
