Origin from Manhattan

The first loft spaces appeared in Manhattan in the 1940s. Creative individuals breathed new life into abandoned industrial buildings, turning them into apartments and art studios. These pioneers of the loft movement were primarily made up of people from creative professions.

London's loft transformation

London played a crucial role in the emergence of lofts as an architectural trend in Europe. During Margaret Thatcher's reign, abandoned warehouses were converted into residential and commercial spaces. One such area is the business district of Kenery Wharf, which used to be warehouses near the sea.

Brewery lofts in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, many lofts are converted from former breweries. A prime example is Mešťan in Prague. Local authorities prioritize preserving the old spirit and uniqueness of these places, so owners are required to keep all original details, such as brick chimneys.

Vienna "Gasometer"

An impressive loft conversion project consisting of four cylindrical brick buildings that were once gas holders and storage facilities, rising to an impressive 70 meters. Each building was individually designed by different architects, with the historic exteriors carefully preserved. Vienna's gas holders offer not only living spaces, but also offices and entertainment areas, creating a true "city within a city".

Ukrainian Isolation Center

One noteworthy loft project in Ukraine is the Insulation Center, established in Donetsk in 2010 on the premises of a former insulation materials factory. In order to promote cultural initiatives, the center hosted more than 20 art projects in its early years. Today, the workshops continue this legacy in Kiev's historic Podil district, offering space for educational programs such as lectures, master classes and workshops.
