Gardeners explained how to deal with dark spots on plants

Black leaf spot is an infection that affects roses and is the most serious disease that plants can contract. The disease is caused by a fungus and can be seen on the leaves of the plant.

Experienced gardeners say that black spot is most common in dry months. If left untreated, the disease spreads quickly and weakens plants, reports Express.co.uk.

The symptoms of black spots are small round black spots measuring one millimeter to one centimeter on the upper side of the spots. The leaf "yellows" around the spots and eventually falls off prematurely.

Affected leaves should be removed with secateurs or by hand. If there is debris near the base of the plant, it should be removed and burned or thrown away.

Litter and diseased leaves should not be placed in the compost pile, as this will lead to the spread of disease. This task must be repeated during the year when a black spot appears on the leaves.

Some gardeners choose to use sprays such as fungicides to control black spots. However, spraying affected plants will minimize the spread of black spots, but will not stop it altogether.
