How to care for an apricot tree in the fall

Fruit trees, such as peaches and apricots, are well-known among gardeners and fans of delicious fruits. However, it is important to remember that these plants are extremely sensitive to cold weather, and their cultivation requires special care and protection from frost.

Peach and apricot trees can suffer frost damage and even freeze at temperatures as low as minus 20-25 degrees Celsius. When minimum temperatures drop to minus 1-2 degrees during flowering, this can lead to significant yield losses. That is why it is so important to provide comfortable conditions and protection for these fruit trees, noviydoctor.com writes.

Choosing a place and time for planting

First of all, it is important to choose the right place for planting peaches and apricots in the garden. It should be a place that is protected from cold winds and has enough sunlight. Next, it is equally important to choose the right time for planting. In the north, it is better to do this in early spring when the danger of frost has almost passed, and in the south, you can also consider a fall planting, but no later than two weeks before the start of frost. In this case, the trees must be insulated and the soil around the roots should be covered with either humus or straw.

Pruning trees

One of the most important procedures is tree pruning, and it should be done on time. Pruning late in the season can result in stimulating the growth of new shoots that have no chance of surviving the frosts of winter. The best time to prune is June. Proper pruning is complex process that requires knowledge, so it is advisable to leave it to experienced professionals.

Watering and weed control

It is also necessary to monitor the level of watering. With sufficient irrigation, trees grow better and absorb more nutrients, which helps to increase resistance to low temperatures. However, you should be careful not to overdo it, as waterlogged soil can lead to diseases and cracked fruit.

There is a greater chance of root freezing if there is a lot of weeds under the trees. Therefore, some gardeners keep the soil under black steam for most of the season. This helps reduce competition between plants for water and nutrients.
