Ancient statue of 1450 accidentally found in Mexico

In a fruit grove on the Gulf Coast, farmers accidentally stumbled upon an ancient six-foot-tall female statue. Such statues have never been found in this region before. It could have been created between 1450 and 1521.

Maria Viti, an archaeologist at the National Institute of Anthropology, said that "it could have been a ruler, judging by her posture and clothes."

It is likely that the creators of the statue could have combined the features of goddesses and women of high political status in ancient Huasteca.

"Aztec documents of the colonial era mentioned female rulers, or at least crown holders who were passed on to their successors... so it's not surprising. In the pre-Hispanic era, women were highly valued, and they lost their status dramatically only after the conquest," said Susan Gillespie, professor of anthropology.

As a reminder, during excavations at the Liujiawa site in Shaanxi province, archaeologists discovered a 2700-year-old pot of face cream in a bronze jar in the tomb of a Chinese nobleman.
