A study by psychologists from the University of Arkansas (USA) said that women like muscles, friendliness, and a sense of humor in men. But women consider completely different traits and characteristics of the opposite sex for a long-term relationship.

In particular, when a woman is set up for a short-term relationship, she will be attracted to a man's muscles, but for a long-term relationship, women will choose a man with a sense of humor (not aggressive) and a friendly personality. The research was published in Personal Relationships.

The researchers interviewed 394 heterosexual women with an average age of 19. 251 women were single and 143 were in a relationship. They were asked what was more important to find a date. They had to choose between looks or character.

Study leader Mitch Brown said that women's choices for a male partner can vary and include "an assessment of the costs and benefits of different sets of traits."

"Our findings show that strength and humor are independent in their influence on women's preferences, although women prefer men's strength in short-term relationships and use affiliative humor in long-term contexts," the researcher explained.
