What trick will allow you to limit electricity consumption when using a washing machine

Faced with rising energy bills, many people are starting to rationalize the use of their home appliances. To save some money, it's time to tackle one of the appliances that uses more energy - the washing machine.

So, to cut down on your energy bills, here's an important tip that will allow you to avoid unnecessary costs. Smart use of your washing machine will not only ensure properly cleaned and fragrant laundry, but will also save you a few extra UAH. About this writes Sante Plus.

First of all, you need to limit the consumption of the washing machine. If it is poorly maintained and dirty, it can quickly lose efficiency and become more energy-consuming due to the accumulation of mold and scale in it. You can solve the problem by cleaning the detergent and conditioner compartments in time to avoid the accumulation of dirt or detergent deposits.

How to clean the detergent compartment from mold, detergent residue and lime scale?

  • Remove the detergent dispenser: open it as you would if you were going to do laundry, and pull it sharply towards you as far as possible (be careful not to use too much force to avoid breaking it). On some models, you can simply push the button.
  • Remove the top of the compartment to make cleaning easier.
  • Place the dispenser in a basin filled with ¾ vinegar and ¼ water for 30 minutes.
  • Remember to also scrub the garbage can with a toothbrush to remove any remaining debris.
  • Wipe the detergent compartment with a damp cloth before putting it back in place.

For more convincing results, also remember to regularly clean your washing machine's drum, rubber seals, and filters. To do this, turn on the machine at high temperature (minimum 60°C) for 1-2 minutes. Do not hesitate to perform this operation at least once a month. This will remove bacteria, detergent residues and unpleasant odors.

How to save money by using a washing machine?

Since washing requires heating water, the washing machine is one of the most energy-consuming household appliances. You may not notice it, but when you do the math, you'll realize that it can cost you a lot of money at the end of each month. Combined with improper usage, the bill will only increase.

Washing machine electricity consumption. What you need to know is that a washing machine can consume an average of 191 kWh per year (or approximately 16 kWh per month and 0.5 kWh per day).

In fact, depending on the selected  program  a wash cycle can consume between 80 and 90% of electricity just to heat water. In addition, your washing machine may be turned on several times a day, especially if you have a large family.

How do you calculate the energy consumption of your washing machine? If you want to know more about your washing machine's annual electricity consumption, simply do the following calculation: Washing machine power (watts) x number of hours per week x 52 weeks (i.e. one year)/1000 = kWh consumption.

To convert kWh to UAH, you need to know the price of a kWh of electricity and multiply it by the number of kWh consumed by the washing machine.

What is the average electricity consumption of a washing machine?

  • 1.33 kWh for class A;
  • 0.95 kWh for class A+;
  • 0.87 kWh for class A++;
  • 0.82 kWh for class A+++.
