In 250 million years, up to 92% of the Earth's surface may become uninhabitable for mammals. During this time, the continents will merge into a single supercontinent called Pangea Ultima.

Such changes will trigger active volcanic processes and increase the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is stated in a scientific study cited by Nature.

Today, the Earth is in the middle of a supercontinent cycle, a period that passes between the formation of a single landmass.

According to scientists, a new supercontinent called Pangaea Ultima will emerge on the equator in about 250 million years. This will happen after the Atlantic Ocean shrinks, when the Afro-Eurasian massif connects with North and South America.

Climate on the supercontinent of the future

Volcanic eruptions will lead to a significant increase in temperature on the planet, where in most parts of Pangea Ultima it will exceed 40°C.

The central regions of the supercontinent will turn into deserts, making them uninhabitable for most mammals. In the worst-case scenario, only 8% of the land will be suitable for their existence.

"This applies not only to mammals, but also to plants and other living organisms. What will happen in such conditions remains unknown. The history of mass extinctions shows that new species often come to the fore," the researchers note.

Scientist Alexander Farnsworth believes that if humanity still exists in 250 million years, it will be able to adapt to new conditions.

"I think the best option would be to leave the Earth and find another, more favorable place to live," he said.
