Archaeologists in Egypt have found several tombs and chapels that are approximately 3300 years old (photo)

Ancient Egyptian tombs and a chapel with jewelry have been discovered in an ancient cemetery at the site of Saqqara (Egypt). It turned out that the largest tomb belonged to a man named Panehsi, who was the overseer of the Temple of Amun.

LiveScience reports that the work at Saqqara is being carried out by scientists from the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden and the Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy.

One of the leaders of the excavation team, curator of the Egyptian and Nubian collection at the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands in Leiden, Larry Weiss, noted that in the tomb of Panehsi, they found incredibly beautiful reliefs with "traces of color". The inscriptions indicate that the man buried in the tomb had no children, he was a minister who organized the delivery of offerings to the grave. Human remains were found in his tomb, but they may belong to people buried at a later date.

Another tomb found belonged to a man named Yuyu, who was a manufacturer. Scholars say that the owner of the tomb was a "specialized artist in the royal treasury." Yuyu's tomb is smaller than Panehsi's and has several works of art depicting "interesting details," including bark bearers (ships) and a funeral procession with mourners. Scientists say they have found images of four generations of the tomb's family, including his parents, himself and his wife, his brother with his wife and children, and his own children and grandchildren.

In another of the tombs found, relief statues depicting four people who probably belong to the same family were discovered. The statues were unfinished, but their design is similar to those found in a neighboring tomb, which belonged to a couple named Maya and Merit, who lived about 50 years before this tomb was built.

In a commentary to Live Science, scientists from Italy commented on the findings as follows: "The quality of this relief is impressive, the artist has played on the three-dimensionality and frontality of the four figures with a consciousness rare in the art of ancient Egypt."
