Chicken eggs are a versatile product that can be used to cook many dishes or eaten ready-made in various forms. They are often cooked for breakfast, as a snack, or added to salads or appetizers. However, eggs can become harmful if they are overcooked.

Boiling eggs is not difficult and almost everyone knows how to do it. When boiling eggs, the main factor that will affect the final result is time. Boiling eggs releases hydrogen sulfide, which penetrates the eggs as they heat up. The yolk contains iron, which, when it comes into contact with hydrogen sulfide, provokes the formation of sulfides. They give the yolk its greenish color.

The egg white contains sulfur, which, when combined with hydrogen, forms a toxic gas. A boiled egg must be placed in cold water, preferably ice water so that the residual heat does not allow the egg to be overcooked.

As a reminder, chicken eggs should not be boiled for more than 10 minutes after the water boils. This is how often you need to boil eggs to get the desired consistency:

  • 2-4 minutes in boiling water if you want runny yolks, the whites will also be soft enough;
  • 6-8 minutes if you want soft yolks but hard whites;
  • 10 minutes if you want completely hard yolks with whites.
